UNA CENA ELEGANTE*AN ELEGANT DINNER

AN ELEGANT DINNER

I heard a heavenly laugh, a laugh of children, a charming, pure and fine silver-like laughter. A smile from the gods, it was. I was returning home, yesterday, Sunday, around seven, when I heard it, and now I absolutely have to report it. How poor are the great, the adults, with their seriousness and with their dry and rigid faces! How rich and small and happy children are! There was happiness so rich and sweet and full in the laughter of two children, who walked next to an adult: such exuberant and delicious joy. They were absolutely blessed, indulging in their laughter. I intentionally slowed my pace to hear them laugh for as long as possible.

It was an enjoyment for them, they enjoyed all the delights that can be there in laughter. They could no longer stop laughing; I saw that they were literally shaken. They even writhed under the laughter. It was so pure, all this, so truly childish! What they perhaps laughed most wildly and most amiably was the severe look that the adult Miss beside them felt obliged to do. The seriousness of the big girl made them laugh more than anything else. But in the end, overwhelmed by so much and so grateful cheerfulness, even the great serious and staid laughed. She was won by the children and now she laughed like a child with the winners, with the little ones. The happy triumph over the melancholy!
